The Well Baby Check: What to Expect
Transcript
The early months with a new baby can bring many questions about feeding, sleeping; and how your baby is growing. I have created this video to explain what a "Well Baby Check" involves and how it can support you during this time. A Well Baby Check is a thorough head-to-toe review of your baby's growth, development, and overall health. It is a chance for an unhurried conversation about anything you may be wondering, or worrying about. In the UK, the NHS offers routine reviews at around two weeks; six to eight weeks; one year; and two years of age. A private Well Baby Check sits alongside these routine reviews, rather than replacing them. Many international families choose a private review for additional reassurance; continuity with one paediatrician; or because they are familiar with similar checks from other countries. The aim is to support your family in whatever way is most useful. The check usually begins with a careful look at your baby's growth, including weight, length, and head circumference. These measurements are plotted on a growth chart, to follow your baby's pattern over time. A full physical examination then looks at the eyes, mouth, heart sounds, breathing, abdomen, hips, and reflexes. For baby boys, the testicles are also checked, as part of routine UK guidance. Development is reviewed in a way that matches your baby's age, and stage of life. This may include early social smiling, head control, hand use, vocal sounds, and how your baby responds to sights and sounds. Feeding is often a major focus in the early months. We'll discuss how feeds are going; your baby's growth pattern; and any difficulties such as: reflux; slow weight gain; cows milk protein allergy; or feeding refusals. Sleep is another common topic in the first year of a baby's life. Helpful conversations include safe sleeping, normal sleep patterns at each stage, and gentle strategies for tiredness or unsettled nights. We will also discuss - vaccinations; vitamin D supplementation, and home safety. International families often have specific questions, about reconciling vaccinations schedules with UK guidelines; and this will also be addressed carefully. Parental wellbeing is just as important as your baby's wellbeing during these months. The Well Baby Check is also a chance to talk about how you are coping, feeding choices, and any postnatal mood changes. You will leave the appointment with a clear summary, a written plan for any next steps, and time to ask follow-up questions later if needed. The aim is reassurance, with practical guidance where helpful. As a consultant paediatrician with training and clinical experience in the UK, Germany and the US; I bring an international perspective to paediatric care - with experience particularly valuable for families who are settling in, or visiting London. My approach is unhurried, evidence-based, and grounded in clear shared decision-making. Many thanks for watching.
